There are various options for travelling from home to your departure airport.

• Drive to the airport
• Take a taxi. Relatively comfortable and without the hassle of driving.
• Go by coach, economical, convenient and, again, no driving. In some areas there a door-to-door services operated by local companies.
• Go by train. Many airports are served by rail links or have a convenient station nearby.
• Fly. If you live in Scotland or the north of England and your most convenient holiday flight departs from, say, Gatwick or Stansted it may be worth considering.

A local taxi service offers the convenience of door-to-door service. Depending on the distance to the airport it could be more economical than driving yourself when you have parking and petrol to pay for. There’s no hassle of driving, parking the car and transferring from car park to terminal.

Driving yourself to the airport is, perhaps the most stressful way to start your holiday. There are always concerns about delays caused by traffic or bad weather. You must allow plenty of time to check in at the car park and transfer to the terminal by courtesy bus which can take 30 to 60 minutes.

If you do drive a time saving option is available. Only slightly more expensive, is “meet-and-greet” parking. On arrival at the airport you are met close to the terminal [usually the airport bus terminal] by a professional, fully insured driver, offload your baggage and hand over your vehicle for transfer to a secure park. When you return phone the service as you leave baggage reclaim and your the car is delivered to the pick up point. Within minutes you are on your way home.

NATIONAL COACH SERVICE

LOCAL COACH AND BUS SERVICES

There are some local services to regional airports and to London Heathrow.

London area is particularly well served but local services elsewhere seem pretty sparse.

The Gatwick Flyer and The Stansted Flyer also operate door-to-door services for those airports from south Essex and parts of Kent and Surrey.

easyBus* operates services to Luton, Gatwick and Stansted from central London and transfers to them from Heathrow [in combination with London Underground].

There’s also Railair, a bus and coach service connecting Heathrow to the national rail network at Feltham, Watford, Woking and Reading.

AIRPORT TO AIRPORT

There may be occasions when you wish to travel to a distant airport because the flights from there to your preferred destination are more convenient or significantly cheaper. For example, Crete is not a destination available from Edinburgh but all the charter companies and easyJet have departures from Gatwick.

The table below is not a definitive list of routes but shows some that may be useful.

However you travel to the airport why not stay in a hotel nearby the night before you fly. Driving to the airport overnight or in the early hours of the morning can be stressful and tiring. At the airport you need to allow time for parking and transfer to the terminal before getting to check-in two hours before your flight leaves. It’s no wonder so many people arrive at their destination exhausted and just wanting to sleep.

How much better to start your holiday early with a night in a hotel, a relaxed sleep and a refreshing shower before being driven to the terminal. You can either park the car the previous day or stay at a hotel which offers deals that include parking. These packages can be cheaper than the cost of parking alone.
